Registering as a Sex Offender in New York

Each state has specific laws regarding sex offender registration and re-registration. The New York Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has a helpful question and answer page which lists information about sex offender registration requirements in New York. Following is some helpful information about registration:

  • If you are imprisoned for a sex crime, the jail or prison will automatically register you as a sex offender 15 days prior to your release.
  • After your release from imprisonment, you will have to fill out an annual Address Verification Form, which the DCJS will mail to your last known address. You must return this form within 10 days of receipt.
  • In New York, sex offenders are categorized as Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 depending upon the nature of the crime they were convicted of and their perceived danger. Level 3 offenders are considered the most dangerous.
  • A Level 3 sex offender must register in person with the local police department every 90 days, to report his or her address.
  • If you move, change your name, or change your internet information (email address, screen names, or other social networking information) you must report this to the DCJS within 10 days of the change.
  • Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders are required to register for life.
  • Level 1 sex offenders are required to register for 20 years, as long as you have not been designated a sexual predator, predicate sex offender or violent sex offender. Those designations will result in life registration.
